ASUS STRIX 7.1 Gaming Headset Review

Do you enjoy listening to impeccable audio while gaming, listening to music, or watching videos on your computer? Well, you need to check out The ASUS STRIX 7.1 Gaming Headset.

The ASUS Strix is a top of the range headset that features true surround-sound designed for immersive gaming and watching videos.

How is it better than other surround sounds?

A normal headset uses volume and echo effects to make noises sound like they are behind you, but the ASUS Strix uses 10 speakers positioned throughout the headset so that the noises are actually coming from different places. Different numbers of speakers can be enabled for 7.1, 5.1, and stereo sound.

What about the audio quality?

The speakers used in the Strix are of incredibly high quality, designed for clarity and immersiveness. The headset comes with a USB audio station that works as an external sound card and can be used to adjust individual audio levels and has multiple presets for different types of audio use.

What’s the design like?

While not manually adjustable, the Strix has a stretching headband to balance itself on your head correctly, and both this band and the padding on the earcups are made of a soft and comfortable material, so even long-term use will provide no discomfort.

Now, let’s talk looks. The headset is large, angular and black with small bits of orange. Inside the earcups, there are orange lights that resemble eyes and are quite menacing when the earcups are folded in.

What else do you need to know?

This product is most suited to avid console and PC gamers and is perhaps not the best choice for more casual, less regular players. It’s a great choice for people who are willing to fork out $189.97 for a surreal sound experience, but if that’s not in your ballpark than perhaps a trade-off could be made on a cheaper headset with a lower quality. It should be noted that the headset outputs in HDMI by default, which does not plug into all computers. However, the USB audio station can be used to convert from HDMI to 2 USB outputs, and only one of the USB outputs needs to be plugged into the computer to use the headset. Speaking of outputs, some people may be concerned about the fact that the headset cable is not replaceable. This is not a massive problem, but it does mean that if the cable is damaged, then the headset is ruined, which is a gamble considering the price of this item. One thing that is replaceable, however, is the microphone. It plugs into the headset via a 3.5mm jack and can be replaced by a different one if it is broken or if a different microphone is desired. The USB sound station also has a microphone in it to help with background noise cancellation. The station also includes an additional input from HDMI for use with consoles and comes with a quad-jack to HDMI converter.
